Anawat Ratchatorn: Identifying Stroke Mimics in the Emergency Department

Anawat Ratchatorn, Doctoral Researcher at Interdisciplinary Transformation University, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article he and his colleagues co-authored, published in The American Journal of Emergency Medicine, adding:

“I’m happy to share our new paper on stroke mimics in the emergency department.

Stroke mimics look like a stroke but are not, which makes quick decisions in the ED harder.

We studied 1,615 patients with suspected acute stroke at Srinagarind Hospital, Khon Kaen University, and found that about 1 in 5 were stroke mimics.

Seizure, altered consciousness, vertigo and fever pointed toward a mimic, while limb weakness and speech problems pointed toward a true stroke.

I’m very honored to be a small part of this team as a health informatician, supporting the work with data science methods.

A big thank you to my colleagues from the Department of Emergency Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, Khon Kaen University. ”
