Christian Heiss: Can Switching to E-Cigarettes Improve Vascular Health?

Christian Heiss, Associate Head of Medical School (Research and Innovation) at the University of Surrey, Professor and NHS Consultant in Interventional Cardiovascular Medicine, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article by Jacob George et al., published in European Journal of Preventive Cardiology, adding:

“Stating the obvious – but worth reinforcing: stopping smoking benefits vascular health.

This systematic review of 23 prospective studies examines two distinct approaches: quitting smoking without switching to e-cigarettes, and replacing combustible cigarettes completely with e-cigarettes.

Quitting was associated with improvements in endothelial function and arterial stiffness.

For smokers who switch completely to e-cigarettes, the review also reports RCTs with encouraging improvements in vascular function independent of nicotine – a promising signal for harm reduction compared with continued smoking.

The evidence for switching remains limited, and improvements in vascular markers do not establish equivalent benefits to complete cessation or most important long-term cardiovascular safety.”
