Early Pregnancy DOAC Exposure Shows No Increased Birth Defect Risk – JTH

Journal of Thrombosis and Haemostasis (JTH) shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article by Kim Dao et al., adding:

“Reproductive safety of direct oral anticoagulants after maternal exposure in early pregnancy: a comparative European Network of Teratology Information Services cohort study

This prospective observational cohort compared 343 pregnancies with first-trimester DOAC exposure and 698 with low-molecular-weight heparin exposure.

Major birth defects occurred in 8/279 (2.9%) and 25/586 (4.3%) evaluable pregnancies, respectively; the adjusted odds ratio was 0.74 (95% CI, 0.33–1.67).

No increased pregnancy-loss risk was detected.

The findings offer reassurance for counseling after inadvertent early exposure, with remaining uncertainty from sample size and exposure duration. They do not establish DOAC safety for continued use during pregnancy.”
