Minh-Ha Tran: Enabling Heparin Anticoagulation Despite HIT

Minh-Ha Tran, Assistant Medical Director at LifeStream Blood Bank, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article he and his colleagues co-authored, published in Journal of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Anesthesia, adding:

“Our systematic review, ‘Intravenous Prostacyclins to Permit Heparin Use During Cardiopulmonary Bypass in Patients with Heparin-Induced Thrombocytopenia,’ is now available online in the Journal of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Anesthesia.

For patients with acute heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT) who require urgent cardiac surgery, anticoagulation during cardiopulmonary bypass presents a significant clinical challenge.

In this review, we examined the published experience with intravenous prostacyclins (including iloprost and epoprostenol) as platelet-inhibitory adjuncts to permit heparin anticoagulation during cardiopulmonary bypass.

Our findings highlight both the potential utility of this approach and the important limitations of the available evidence.

Thanks to my coauthors and collaborators for their contributions to this work!

Elsevier has provided complimentary full-text access through December 25, 2026.”
