Abel Hailu: A New Chapter for Pediatric Oncology and Hematology Care in Ethiopia
Abel Hailu, Board Member at SIOP Africa and Chair of the Local Organizing Committee for the SIOP Africa 2028 Conference, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Today, the Ethiopian Society of Pediatric Hematology and Oncology (ESPHO), together with the National PHO Satellite Clinic Project Lead, Dr. Diriba Fufa, and the Ministry of Health, conducted a comprehensive site visit to Hawassa University Hospital.
The team carried out an in‑depth assessment of the Pediatric Oncology Unit.
We are delighted to announce that the initial satellite clinic has now been fully transformed into a full-fledged Pediatric Hematology and Oncology Unit—a remarkable milestone for the institution and for childhood cancer care in Ethiopia.
We extend our heartfelt congratulations to the College of Medicine and Health Sciences for this achievement, and we pay special tribute to Dr. Mulualem, whose leadership, dedication, and vision have been instrumental in championing and advancing the Unit.
The Unit has demonstrated impressive growth and clear potential to evolve into a Center of Excellence if it continues on its current trajectory.
During the visit, the evaluation team held a high‑level discussion with the college leadership, led by Dr. Fitsum Woldgebriel, Chief Executive Officer of Hawassa University Hospital.
The dialogue focused on ongoing oncology activities, progress updates, and future directions, reaffirming the institution’s commitment to the WHO Global Initiative for Childhood Cancer (GICC) goals.
We remain fully confident that Hawassa University Hospital will honor its pledge and deliver outstanding results for children with cancer and blood disorders in the region.”
