Ammara Mushtaq: How Research Fills the Gaps in Fast Paced Healthcare
Ammara Mushtaq, Principal Investigator Principal Investigator at Rasai Research, shared a post on LinkedIn.
“In clinical research, regulations go to great lengths to ensure that participants clearly understand they may or may not benefit from a study, and that there may be unknown risks.
We make this very clear to every participant during the consent process.
However, within those regulatory boundaries, there is something I often reflect on.
Sometimes, participants may benefit simply from the screening process itself.
Just this month alone, while screening participants for research studies:
I worked with one participant to optimize their diabetes and improve HbA1c control so they could qualify for a study.
I spoke with another participant about the importance of anticoagulation for their atrial fibrillation, which was indicated but had not yet been addressed.
In both cases, these were conditions that needed attention regardless of the study.
But the reality is, in a fast-paced, RVU-driven healthcare environment, these issues may not always get addressed in a 5-minute primary care visit.
Because they came in for a research screening visit, their conditions were reviewed, discussed, and ultimately optimized.
We remain compliant.
We never advertise research as a direct benefit to participants.
But facts are facts.
Clinical research helps improve and sometimes save lives in more ways than one.”
