Augustina Isioma Ikusemoro: Malaria Doesn’t Only Come from Mosquitoes sometimes it Travels Through Blood
Augustina Isioma Ikusemoro, Hematology and Transfusion Medicine Specialist at Sharjah Blood Transfusion and Research Center, shared a post on LinkedIn:
” ‘Malaria doesn’t only come from mosquitoes… sometimes it travels through blood. But safe transfusion saves lives. Know the difference.’
But here’s something many don’t know…
Malaria can also be transmitted through blood transfusion.
This is called transfusion-transmitted malaria, and it can happen if donated blood is not properly screened – especially in malaria-endemic regions.
That’s why safe blood systems matter.
Before every transfusion, donated blood must be carefully tested, donors properly selected, and patients monitored.
Because for a child with severe malaria anemia…
for a mother with pregnancy complications…
or for a trauma patient fighting for life…
blood transfusion is not the problem – it is the solution.
Safe blood saves lives.
Strong screening protects patients.
And informed communities strengthen health systems.
This World Malaria Day…
Support safe donation.
Support safe transfusion.
Because every drop of safe blood brings hope.
The World Malaria Day 2026 theme is ‘Driven to End Malaria: Now We Can. Now We Must.’ ”
