Augustina Isioma Ikusemoro: Thalassaemia is not Just a Blood Disorder – It is a Public Health Priority
Augustina Isioma Ikusemoro, Hematology and Transfusion Medicine Specialist at Sharjah Blood Transfusion and Research Center, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Thalassaemia is not just a blood disorder.
It is a public health priority.
Behind every statistic is a child, a family, and a lifelong journey of transfusions, monitoring, and hope.
This World Thalassaemia Day, we must remember:
- Thalassaemia is inherited — not contagious
- Millions worldwide are affected
- Many patients depend on lifelong transfusion support
- The disease places a major burden on families and healthcare systems
But here’s the powerful truth:
Many cases are preventable through:
- premarital screening
- genetic counselling
- early diagnosis
- public awareness
When communities understand the genetics, we reduce suffering, improve outcomes, and protect future generations.
This is why awareness matters.
This is why screening matters.
This is why equitable access to care matters.
Together, we can move from:
- delayed diagnosis – to early intervention
- stigma – to support
- silence – to advocacy
Because thalassaemia is not just a family problem.
It is a shared global responsibility.
