Axay Tomar: How Simulation-Based Education Shapes Safer Transfusion Practices
Axay Tomar, Associate Professor at Indian Army, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article he and his colleages co-authored, published in Laboratory Medicine, adding:
“There are moments in research that may look small on paper, but as an educator, I believe they are the biggest wins.
Our study on structured, simulation-based education for safe blood transfusion practices among nurses involved 227 nurses and demonstrated a substantial improvement in knowledge and self-reported practice following a focused 4-hour training programme.
But for me, the real achievement goes beyond the numbers.
Transfusion Medicine is one of those specialties that remains invisible until someone takes the time to teach it.
A nurse at the bedside may be the final safeguard between a patient and a potentially catastrophic transfusion error. Yet transfusion safety cannot belong to the Blood Bank alone.
It requires nurses, clinicians, laboratory professionals, administrators and transfusion specialists to understand each other’s roles and responsibilities.
It doesn’t matter how experienced you are, what your designation is, or what specialty you come from.
Knowledge shared across professional boundaries is what makes patient management truly multi-pronged.
The most rewarding part of this work was not seeing a statistically significant P value or a large effect size.
It was seeing someone who previously knew little about Transfusion Medicine walk away knowing what to check, what can go wrong, what to do when it does and, most importantly, why it matters.
Because research generates evidence.
But teaching turns evidence into safer practice.”
