Brian A Beh: 5 Strategies to Assist and Maintain Motivation During Stroke Rehabilitation

Brian A Beh, Honorary Consumer Fellow at The George Institute for Global Health, shared on LinkedIn:

”Five Strategies to Assist/Maintain Motivation during Your Stroke Rehabilitation.

Motivation after Stroke is not a matter of willpower.

It is shaped by changes in the brain, emotional load, fatigue, confidence, and the sheer effort required to rebuild everyday skills.

Many survivors experience apathy or reduced drive because the stroke has disrupted the brain’s reward and initiation systems, making it harder to start or sustain activities even when the desire to recover is still there.

Supporting motivation is therefore a core part of rehabilitation, not an optional extra,as many of us Stroke Survivors have found in our ongoing rehab.

I hope my musings in my blog can help others during their journey.”

Ashraf Gerges, Neurological Physiotherapist, Founder of Neurophysio Hub, Lecturer in Physiotherapy (Rehabilitation) at Adelaide University, shared Brian A Beh‘s post on LinkedIn, adding:

”Sharing this thoughtful piece on sustaining motivation during stroke rehabilitation, an aspect of recovery that deserves far more attention in both clinical practice and lived experience.

This offers practical encouragement to survivors, families, and clinicians supporting the journey.”
