“Have you heard of blood clots in the legs?
A deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a blood clot in a deep vein, usually in the leg.
Watch for:
- One-sided leg swelling
- Pain or tenderness
- Warmth
- Redness or discoloration
Symptoms may be limited to the calf with a distal DVT or involve the whole leg with a more proximal clot.
Important: DVT can have no symptoms at all.
Symptoms alone cannot rule it out.
A DVT can lead to a pulmonary embolism (PE) when a blood clot travels to the lungs. Sudden shortness of breath, chest pain, coughing up blood, a rapid or irregular heartbeat, or fainting require immediate medical attention.
Know the signs. Don’t ignore unexplained one-sided leg swelling or pain, whether in yourself or someone around you.
Disclaimer: This post is for general educational purposes only and does not constitute medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. If you have concerning symptoms or think you may have a DVT or PE, seek medical evaluation promptly.
In an emergency, call 911.”
