Danny Hsu: Pharma’s 2025 Blockbusters Through a Hematologist’s Lens

Danny Hsu, President of THANZ, Director of Therapeutic Apheresis, Immune and Obstetric Haematology at South Western Sydney Local Health District, shared Spencer Knight’s post on LinkedIn:

“The Haematology Footprint in Global Pharma.

This fascinating graphic breaking down the top-selling medicines of pharma giants in 2025 offers a striking look at where global healthcare resources are concentrated.

As a haematologist, I immediately found myself scanning the list to see our specialty’s footprint.

The impact of haematological therapies is undeniable, with several key drugs driving massive global revenue.

Two major themes stand out to me when looking at these blockbusters:

1. The Changing Face of Anticoagulation:

It is impossible to miss the dominance of Eliquis (apixaban), appearing as a top-three revenue driver for both Bristol Myers Squibb and Pfizer.

It highlights just how profoundly DOACs have transformed the management of thrombosis and atrial fibrillation over the last decade.

However, with Eliquis coming off patent, we are standing on the precipice of a major shift.

The impending arrival of generics will drastically change the health-economic landscape of antithrombotic stewardship, increasing accessibility while forcing us to navigate a new era of prescribing and monitoring.

2. The Myeloma Revolution:

The presence of Darzalex (daratumumab) as Johnson and Johnson’s top-selling medicine is a testament to the incredible strides made in multiple myeloma therapy.

Anti-CD38 monoclonal antibodies have completely revolutionized our treatment algorithms, significantly extending survival and improving the quality of life for our patients.

It is a powerful reminder of how targeted immunotherapies have moved from novel concepts to foundational pillars of care.

It will be fascinating to see how this list evolves over the next five years, particularly as we see the rise of novel targeted therapies and the impact of patent cliffs on our daily clinical practice.”

Spencer Knight, Senior Director at Hartmann Young, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Which drugs led pharma revenue in 2025?

The era of blockbuster drugs keeps expanding.

This graphic, thanks to the collab with Joanna Sadowska, highlights the top three revenue-generating medicines for major pharma companies in FY2025, with total company revenues ranging from 41 billion dollars to 65 billion dollars.

Key insights:

  1. The plus 60 billion dollars club is growing with four companies: Eli Lilly and Company, Pfizer, AbbVie, and Johnson and Johnson -now exceed 60 billion dollars in annual revenue.
  2. GLP-1 drugs are reshaping the market and driving highest revenue. With new competitors entering the space, 2026 will be interesting to watch.
  3. Oncology remains a core pillar. Keytruda continues to anchor Merck and Co.’s revenue, while Tagrisso and Imfinzi highlight the strength of AstraZeneca’s oncology portfolio.
  4. Immunology remains strong. Skyrizi and Rinvoq have largely offset the decline from biosimilar competition to Humira for AbbVie.

Knowing the M and A that’s occurred in 2026…

What stands out to you?
