David McIntosh: Why We Need Thousands of Blood Donations Every Day

David McIntosh, Founder and Chair of United Plasma Action, shared American Red Cross’s post on LinkedIn:

“This splendid post from the American Red Cross is rare – and unusually valuable.

Please do repost!

It emphasises the amount of blood needed in an vast range of clinical settings – including in operating theatres, clinics and in emergencies at the roadside …

The reason I mark this post as unusual is that it’s straightforward about the large amounts of blood that are often needed to give just one patient what their clinical condition demands.

The more popular, but utterly mythical, assertion that one donation saves three lives is less helpful.

What we donors need to know – and sometimes have to be reminded – is that thousands of donations are needed every day – every day – to alleviate suffering and save lives.

There has never been a better day for booking your next donation appointment.”

American Red Cross shared a post on LinkedIn:

“This is how much blood it takes for routine treatment and lifesaving medical procedures. Many hospital patients rely on blood for timely care — every blood donation can help doctors save lives.

Make an appointment to donate blood.”
