This image shows units of Fresh Frozen Plasma (FFP) stored in a blood bank freezer. More than just a frozen blood component, FFP plays a critical role in modern transfusion medicine-one that continues to evolve with emerging evidence and updated clinical guidelines.

According to current AABB recommendations:

Routine or prophylactic plasma transfusion is generally not recommended.
An abnormal coagulation test (e.g., INR) alone is not a sufficient indication for plasma transfusion.
FFP should not be used for volume expansion.
Plasma transfusion decisions should be guided by the patient’s clinical condition, particularly in the presence of active bleeding or before an invasive procedure when clinically significant coagulopathy is present.
