Factor X Deficiency – From Mild Bruising to Life Threatening Hemorrhage – ICHCC

“Factor X deficiency, or Stuart-Prower factor deficiency:

  • is an ultra-rare bleeding disorder caused by a lack or dysfunction of Factor X—a critical protein required for blood clotting. Affecting about 1 in 500,000 to a million people, it can be inherited genetically or acquired later in life.
  • Symptoms and ComplicationsSeverity is generally classified by the amount of circulating Factor X in the blood:Mild (40% – 60% of normal): Easy bruising, mild nose or mouth bleeds, and bleeding after trauma or surgery.Moderate (10% – 40% of normal): Spontaneous minor bleeds, heavy periods, or prolonged bleeding after dental procedures.Severe (<10% of normal): High risk of spontaneous, life-threatening hemorrhages (such as intracranial bleeds), joint/muscle bleeds, and umbilical cord bleeding in newborns.”
