Jitu Lal Meena: A Framework for Better Blood Utilisation and Safer Transfusion Practices
Jitu Lal Meena, Member of Medical Assessment and Rating board (MARB) at National Medical Commission, Government of India, Division Head of Service Provider Engagement at National Health Authority (NHA), shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Patient Blood Management (PBM) Excellence – Every Unit Matters. Every Patient Matters.
I am pleased to share my Patient Blood Management (PBM) Excellence Manual, a comprehensive reference developed to promote safe transfusion practices, rational blood utilization, and the prevention of avoidable transfusions across healthcare systems.
Blood is not just a medical resource; it is a precious human gift.
Every unit comes from a voluntary donor and deserves to reach the right patient, for the right indication, at the right time.
This manual focuses on:
- Early identification and treatment of anemia.
- Minimizing blood loss through appropriate clinical practices.
- Rational and evidence-based transfusion decisions.
- Correct patient identification and bedside verification.
- Safe blood sampling, labelling and compatibility checks.
- Early recognition and management of transfusion reactions.
- Monitoring blood utilization and continuous quality improvement.
- Building a strong culture of transfusion safety.
My core belief: The safest transfusion is the one that was never needed, and every necessary transfusion must be given safely.
Patient Blood Management is not simply about reducing blood utilization; it is about improving patient outcomes, protecting a precious resource, and ensuring that blood remains available for those who truly need it.
My vision is to promote a global healthcare culture where every unit of blood is respected, every transfusion is justified, and every patient receives safe, appropriate care.
- Treat Anemia
- Save Blood
- Transfuse Only When Needed
- Check the Patient
- Watch for Reactions
- Learn Without Blame.
Together, let us build a future of better blood utilization, safer patients, and stronger healthcare systems.”
