Julia Korobkin: How Scientific Networking Solved Real Lab Challenges
Julia Korobkin, Scientific Researcher at Center for Theoretical Problems of Physicochemical Pharmacology, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“As a junior researcher, I used to despise conferences.
I thought that conducting good research and securing funding were all that mattered.
I mean, why travel for 1.5 days each way and share a hotel room with half the faculty when you could instead be cooped up in your beloved lab, analyzing data until dawn?
I mean, if there are any problems, you can just read more papers, right?
But I’ve learned that communication is just as important.
Just go and ask questions, you shy Gen Z.
It’s really not that hard.
At the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis (ISTH) in Paris conference, where I had the honor of giving an oral presentation, conversations with Dr. Prof. Reinhold Medina and Dr. Freda Passam about endothelial models helped us quickly resolve challenges we had been facing in the lab (particularly growing endothelial cells in a PDMS flow chamber and assessing their viability).
Without advice from people who specialize in this field, finding a solution might have taken us ages.
The time saved can be used for cooping up in the lab and analyzing data.
Ms. Caitlin Debaene’s poster also provided valuable insights into preanalytics and anticoagulant selection when studying thrombus growth in flow chambers.
A great reminder that sharing knowledge and asking questions can move research forward faster.
