Julie Cardoso: Bringing Clinicians Together to Improve VTE Detection and Treatment

Julie Cardoso, Owner and Executive Director of Independent Diagnostic Testing Facility at Universal Ultrasound Diagnostics, posted on LinkedIn:

”Spot the Clot. Stop the Clot

In honor of Blood Clot Awareness Month, we are bringing clinicians together to improve how we detect and treat venous thromboembolism (VTE).

This B-mode ultrasound image shows thrombus within the femoral vein, visible as echogenic material within the vessel lumen. Early venous thrombi are fibrin-rich structures made up of platelets, red blood cells, and inflammatory components.

Research has demonstrated that ‘clot begets clot,’ meaning an existing thrombus can continue to propagate through ongoing fibrin deposition and platelet aggregation. Within 5–7 days, thrombi begin to organize as fibroblasts and collagen deposition transforms the clot, making it more structured and increasingly resistant to thrombolysis.

Understanding how clot composition evolves and how it appears on ultrasound is critical for clinicians aiming to accurately detect, interpret, and manage venous thromboembolism (VTE).

That’s why Universal U is different.

At Universal U, participants scan real patients with complex DVT pathology, gaining hands-on experience that cannot be learned from slides alone.
