Luke Chen: VEXAS Syndrome – Uncovering Hidden Cases in Nova Scotia
Luke Chen, Hematologist at Dalhousie University, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article by Joey Fitzpatrick, published in QEII Foundation, adding:
“Thank you QEII Foundation for highlighting VEXAS in the latest issue of QEII Times.
The VEXAS (Vacuoles, E1 enzyme, X chromosome, autoinflammatory, somatic) syndrome was discovered in 2020 and typically appears in men over the age of 40 with protean manifestations such as relapsing polychondritis (ears and nose), cutaneous inflammation, high CRP, pulmonary disease, macrocytic cytopenias, vacuoles in bone marrow, and thrombosis, among other symptoms.
Often, high dose steroids are the only conventional treatment that controls the inflammation – but better therapies are available.
Statistically, there should be 75-80 cases in Nova Scotia … where are they?”
