Luluva Ghadiyali: Modern Approaches to Aplastic Anemia
Luluva Ghadiyali, Consultant Physiotherapist at uniCare Home Health, shared a post on LinkedIn:
”Aplastic anemia is a rare condition where the bone marrow stops making enough blood cells. This leads to low levels of red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets (called pancytopenia). The bone marrow may look mostly empty or filled with fat instead of producing blood cells normally.
Because of this, people with aplastic anemia may experience:
- Anemia: tiredness, weakness, and shortness of breath
- Bleeding: easy bruising, nosebleeds, or prolonged bleeding
- Infections: because there are not enough white blood cells to fight infections
It is a non-cancerous blood disorder that affects the normal production of blood cells.
There are two major approaches for severe aplastic anemia:
- Stem cell transplant to replace the faulty blood-making system with healthy donor stem cells.
- Immunosuppressive therapy and medicines such as eltrombopag to calm the immune system and encourage the patient’s remaining bone marrow stem cells to make blood cells.
The best option is individualized by a hematologist.
Current expert recommendations particularly consider age, disease severity, overall fitness, and availability of a well-matched donor when choosing between transplantation and immunosuppressive treatment.”
