Lysanne van der Wal – Smit: Improving Care for Women Affected by HG at ICHG 2026
Lysanne van der Wal – Smit, Bestuurslid of Diëtisten netwerk hyperemesis gravidarum, shared a post on Linkedin:
“What an inspiring and valuable few days at ICHG 2026
As a dietitian specialized in Hyperemesis Gravidarum (HG), it was incredibly meaningful to come together with researchers, physicians, patients, and healthcare professionals from around the world, all working toward the same goal:
Improving care for women affected by HG.
The conference offered impressive sessions on clinical outcomes, treatment strategies, nutrition and the patient and provider experience.
It was encouraging to see how much important work is being done worldwide to improve both research and care in the field of HG.
But what perhaps impacted me most were the stories of two women who openly shared their experiences with HG pregnancies.
Their stories showed exactly why better awareness, knowledge, and recognition of HG are so important.
Because there are still women who feel unheard.
Who feel deeply alone during a time when they need support the most.
Who become severely malnourished and dehydrated.
Who can arrive at the hospital critically ill, sometimes at the very edge of what their bodies can handle.
HG is not ‘just pregnancy sickness.’
It is a serious condition that can completely disrupt a woman physically, mentally, and socially.
That is exactly why it is so important that healthcare professionals understand what they are treating, recognize the warning signs, and provide the right care in time.
No woman should feel unseen, disbelieved, or alone in a situation this severe.
The complex case discussions were equally impactful.
International experts openly shared some of their most challenging cases and reflected honestly on difficult clinical decisions.
Cases involving sepsis, severe malnutrition, thrombosis, and medication dilemmas.
Situations where there is not always one clear ‘right’ answer.
What this conference showed above all is that the HG community is made up of passionate people who keep searching for better answers.
Researchers, patients, physicians, dietitians, and healthcare professionals who refuse to settle for ‘this is how it has always been,’ but continue to learn, reflect, and improve.
I am taking home new insights, inspiration, and valuable international connections and bringing them back to the women I support in my daily work.
A huge thank you to all volunteers, speakers, researchers, patients, and professionals who made these days so meaningful.
Here’s to continuing progress in HG care.”
