Maha Othman: Leading Scientific Collaboration Across Hemostasis at ISTH 2026
Maha Othman, Co-Chairman SSC on Disseminated intravascular coagulopathy at International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis, shared on LinkedIn:
“I almost never delay posting about the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis (ISTH) Congress, but this year was different.
Following ISTH 2026, in Paris, I found it difficult to summarize the experience—more than a few photos or a single post could possibly capture.
The meeting offered incredibly memorable moments and exceptional opportunity to contribute in several capacities, including:
- Speaking on postpartum hemorrhage at the launch of the The Lancet Haematology Commission on women’s bleeding disorders – thanks Bethany Samuelson Bannow for the invite to lead this section.
- Co-organizing and chairing two joint Scientific and Standardization Committee (SSC) sessions (discussing complex and interrelated topics for three SSCs of the ISTH)
- Leading the SSC on DIC session (program prep and chairing the session)
- Delivering an oral presentation in the VWF-SSC session (manuscript now in the final stages of revision for Journal of Thrombosis and Haemostasis (JTH)).
- Five scientific posters (delivered by four of my brilliant mentees) .Thomas Kazmirchuk, Vrisha Shah, Zoe Philippopoulos, Stefania Coroneos, Helen Okoye (Yousra Tera as first author)
- A collaborative oral abstract on HIT and potential use of AI-generated peptides (delivered by Ashkan Golshani)
- Participating in a stimulating discussions on DIC in pregnancy (thanks Offer Erez for organizing this)
- Contributing to the Early Career Program as part of the SSC leadership team. Thanks Aaron Iding for the invite.
Beyond the scientific program, one of the greatest rewards of ISTH is reconnecting with colleagues, collaborators, and friends from around the world.
My sincere thanks to the organizers, speakers, trainees, and colleagues who made ISTH 2026 such a memorable and impactful meeting— I already look forward to seeing everyone again in 2027!”
