Mbunya S. Misiani: Changing the Narrative on Bleeding Disorders Across Africa
Mbunya S. Misiani, Principal Consultant at Dr Mbunya Health and Leadership Consultancy, shared on LinkedIn:
”March is Bleeding Disorders Awareness Month
March reminds us that bleeding disorders are real, lifelong, and often invisible conditions affecting thousands of individuals and families across Kenya, Africa, and the world.
From hemophilia and von Willebrand disease to other rare bleeding disorders — timely diagnosis, comprehensive care, access to treatment, and strong patient advocacy can mean the difference between disability and dignity, isolation and inclusion.
In many African settings, delayed diagnosis, limited factor availability, stigma, and health system gaps still remain significant challenges.
But together — through partnerships, education, ECHO learning platforms, patient organizations, and policy engagement — we are changing the narrative.
This month, let us:
- Promote early diagnosis
- Advocate for sustainable access to clotting factor and essential medicines
- Strengthen comprehensive care centers
- Support caregivers and families
- Empower patient voices
Bleeding disorders are manageable.
Access to care is a right — not a privilege.
As we continue strengthening capacity across Africa through education, collaboration, and advocacy, I remain committed to advancing equitable hematology care for all.”
