Melissa Hollo: Using AI to Identify Iron Deficiency Anemia Months Earlier
Melissa Hollo, Director of Project Management at hc1 and Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“I’ve spent years observing a frustrating pattern in healthcare.
The risk exists in the labs and is measurable, yet we often wait to act until it impacts the patient.
Iron deficiency and anemia are conditions that develop gradually, and we consistently identify them too late.
This drives my passion, and I am genuinely excited about the developments at hc1.
We have evolved our platform into Clinical IQ, an AI-driven approach that transforms routine lab data into early, actionable clinical insights.
The aim is not to complicate an already intricate system with more technology, but to bridge the gap between when risk appears and when care changes.
A recent study in the American Journal of Clinical Pathology supports this direction: machine learning models using longitudinal lab data can identify iron deficiency anemia 3–6 months earlier than traditional methods.
This timeframe is crucial-for anemia patients, pregnant mothers, surgical candidates, and anyone whose outcome relies on timely intervention.
Here’s where this applies:
- Earlier anemia treatment leads to fewer transfusions and better recovery.
- Prenatal risk identification fosters healthier pregnancies.
- Smarter lab stewardship guides better care.
- Data-driven transfusion decisions enhance safety.
I am proud of the team and optimistic about what lies ahead.
