Mirza Ismail Baig: Can Inflammation Trigger Thrombosis?
Mirza Ismail Baig, Clinical Intern and Physician Assistant at CARE Hospitals, Quality CARE India Limited, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Can inflammation trigger thrombosis?
For a long time, inflammation and thrombosis were studied as two separate processes.
Today, growing evidence suggests they are closely interconnected.
When inflammation occurs, it doesn’t just activate the immune system.
It also influences the vascular endothelium, platelet activation, and the coagulation cascade.
This interaction—often referred to as thromboinflammation—has become an important area of research in conditions such as:
- Acute ischemic stroke
- Cerebral venous sinus thrombosis (CVST)
- Sepsis
- COVID-19-associated coagulopathy
- Acute coronary syndromes
Understanding this relationship may help explain why some patients remain at high thrombotic risk despite receiving standard antithrombotic therapy.
As our understanding of thromboinflammation evolves, future treatment strategies may extend beyond conventional anticoagulants and antiplatelet agents to include therapies that target inflammatory pathways alongside coagulation.
Medicine is increasingly showing us that thrombosis is not always just a problem of clot formation.
Sometimes, it begins with inflammation.
The intersection of immunology, neurology, and hemostasis is opening new directions for research—and perhaps the next generation of therapies.”
