Mohammad Zuryan: Pre-Marital Genetic Screening for Thalassemia Prevention
Mohammad Zuryan, CEO at RS Motors Pakistan, shared a post on LinkedIn:
” ‘Know your genes before you say Qubool Hai.’
We spend so much time planning a wedding, but how often do we actually talk about the health of the family we’re about to build?
Thalassemia affects thousands of families in Pakistan, yet genetic screening before marriage is still something we rarely talk about.
And yes, cousin marriages are part of this conversation too.
Not to blame or shame anyone, but to understand the risks and make informed choices.
We’re Gen Z. We talk about almost everything.
I genuinely think talking about our genes should be just as normal.
I’m really happy to be part of NASL (National Awareness for Genetic Screening and Literacy), Pakistan’s first genetic literacy movement, recognised internationally by New York University and nationally by Hadia Foundation.
This post is a little recap of what we’ve been working on, but more importantly, it feels like the beginning of something we really want to take forward.
A special appreciation to President of NASL Muhammad Zain Naveed, Thalassaemia International Federation (TIF), World Health Organization, Shahram Raza Shouq, Saram Raza Shouq, Hemostasis Today, Hadia Foundation and everyone helping make this movement possible.
Maybe genetic screening should come before the wedding, not after the suffering.”
