Mohd Ashhad։ Quality Control in the Blood Bank

Mohd Ashhad, Medical Laboratory Technologist at Blood Bank, shared a post on LinkedIn։

“Quality Control in the Blood Bank

Today, while working in the blood bank, I performed routine quality control and blood grouping using a gel card.

Quality control is one of the most important parts of transfusion medicine. A blood component is not just a product – it can directly affect a patient’s life.

From reagent quality and blood grouping to crossmatching and blood component storage, every step requires proper monitoring, documentation, and attention to detail.

During routine blood bank work, QC helps us ensure:

  • Reagents are working correctly
  • ABO and Rh(D) typing results are accurate
  • Crossmatch results are reliable
  • Blood components are stored under appropriate conditions
  • Blood bank equipment is functioning properly
  • Errors are identified before they can affect patient safety

The image shows the gel card testing I performed today. Proper technique, reagent performance, controls, and correct interpretation of agglutination reactions are essential for obtaining reliable results.

Working in a blood bank reminds me that even a small laboratory step can have a big impact on patient care.

Quality control is not just a procedure – it is a responsibility toward every patient who may receive a transfusion.”
