“Why Is Anticoagulation Used During Hemodialysis?
During hemodialysis, blood passes through an extracorporeal circuit.
Because blood comes into contact with the dialysis circuit, there is a risk of clot formation.
That’s why anticoagulation may be used according to the patient’s prescription and clinical condition.
As dialysis professionals, we should understand:
- Why anticoagulation is needed
- The prescribed dose and protocol
- Signs of clotting in the circuit
- Signs of bleeding
- When to report concerns to the clinical team
Patient safety always comes first.
