Moustafa Abdou: The Value of Peripheral Blood Smear Examination in Hematology
Moustafa Abdou, Author and Founder of AskHematologist.com, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Blood morphology significantly enhances the diagnostic value of a routine blood count.
A skilful examination of a well-prepared peripheral blood smear remains one of the most valuable procedures in the hematology laboratory.
Careful assessment of blood morphology may reveal previously unsuspected disorders, even when blood count parameters appear normal.
For example, the presence of hypersegmented neutrophils on a blood smear may provide the earliest hematological clue to vitamin B12 or folate deficiency, even in the absence of the characteristic macrocytosis typically associated with these conditions.”
