Muhammad Yousaf: Iron Deficiency Beyond Diet
Muhammad Yousaf, Iron Deficiency Beyond Diet, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Nutrition Beyond the Plate 4 Iron Deficiency: More Than Just ‘Not Eating Enough Iron’
When we talk about iron deficiency, we often think the problem is simply not eating enough iron.
But during my studies, I learned that iron deficiency can be influenced by several factors including dietary intake, absorption, increased requirements, and blood loss.
In my latest article, I explore:
- Why iron is important for the body
- Heme vs. non heme iron sources
- How vitamin C can improve non heme iron absorption
- Why increased requirements can affect iron status
- The difference between iron deficiency and iron deficiency anemia
- Why we should look beyond diet when understanding iron deficiency
One important lesson for me was
Nutrition is not only about how much of a nutrient we consume it is also about how well our body can absorb and use it.
Understanding nutrition means looking at the whole picture.
