Nasir K.: The Global Healthcare Community Comes Together for IPAW 2026

Nasir K., Chief Executive Officer at Global Medical Consultancy, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Today marks the start of International Plasma Awareness Week.

This week (October 5-9), the global healthcare community comes together for International Plasma Awareness Week (IPAW 2026) to thank incredible donors and highlight a critical need in healthcare.

Plasma makes up about 55% of our blood.

Often called ‘liquid gold,’ and it’s vital proteins and antibodies are used to create therapies for rare, chronic, and genetic conditions – like primary immunodeficiencies and bleeding disorders.

These lifesaving medicines cannot be synthetically created in a lab.

They rely 100% on the generosity of human donors.

For hundreds of thousands of patients worldwide, a plasma donation isn’t just medicine; it’s a lifeline.

Looking at this from a Pakistani perspective, the conversation becomes even more urgent.

Currently, Pakistan is not yet into commercial source plasma collection, meaning our healthcare system relies heavily on expensive, imported plasma-derived products to save lives.

But things are changing.

With a massive, young population and millions of whole blood bags collected annually, we sit on incredible potential.

By building local plasma infrastructure, we can transition from a state of importing dependency to healthcare self-reliance – saving both foreign exchange and, more importantly, Pakistani lives.

How we can all support the cause this week:

  • Educate to help destigmatize and raise awareness about the donation process.
  • Support local progress, policies and partnerships aimed at bringing safe, localized blood component separation and plasma-farming facilities to Pakistan.
  • Keep supporting our local blood banks by continuing to donate whole-blood as Recovered plasma from regular blood donations is the stepping stone toward a self-sufficient ecosystem!”
