Raghavendra Rao: The Surprising Link Between Chronic Venous Insufficiency and Falls

Raghavendra Rao, General Surgeon at Vein Clinic, Founder of Best Surgical Education, LLC, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Today I had an interesting encounter with an elderly patient who is currently being cared for by me for chronic venous insufficiency.

She has already finished several sessions of endothermal treatments, and I asked her how her pain and swelling symptoms were coming along.

She mentioned that there was very little improvement, which obviously led me to the next question: Would you like to continue with the treatments?

She replied yes, saying she wants to continue as she no longer falls as often.

My first reaction was to assume she was confused till I used Deep Research to tease out a possible relation between falls and varicose veins.

Falls in chronic venous insufficiency are related gait abnormalities due to poor ankle function (edema, ulcers etc).

There seems to be a relation to orthostatic hypotension (POTS) as well.

See the full systematic review below.

Generated with Deep Research.”
