Rena Hirani Awarded the Inaugural James Isbister Prize at the Blood ISBT 2025
Rena Hirani, Senior Research Fellow at the Australian Red Cross Lifeblood, shared on LinkedIn:
”Following a big week of wins, I am thrilled to share yet more exciting news.
I was awarded the inaugural James Isbister Prize at the recent Blood ISBT 2025 Conference in Perth.
This honour marks a significant milestone in my research career, and I’m deeply grateful for the recognition.
Professor James Isbister is a pioneering figure in haematology, transfusion medicine and medical education.
His work shaped global standards in patient blood management.
Prof. Isbister completed his postgraduate training in internal medicine at St Vincent’s Hospital.
He was part of a team that performed the first successful Australian allogeneic bone marrow transplants, which is now commonly used to treat blood cancers.
Transfusion medicine became his passion since every speciality involves blood.
This prize, named after him in honour of his achievements to Australian medicine, was awarded for significant contributions in research into blood and blood products, education of the medical community and encouragement of appropriate clinical use of blood and plasma products for better healthcare.
The occasion was made even more memorable by the fact that James, energetically in his 80s, was present to award me personally which was a deeply meaningful honour.
I would also like to recognise the long term support of my work by Australian Red Cross Lifeblood, ANZSBT and National Blood Authority, Australia.
It is a true privilege to be a part of the transfusion community.”
