Rick Matthews: Balancing Established VTE Partnerships with Innovative Interventional Technologies
Rick Matthews, Sr. Vascular Consultant at Argon Medical Devices, Inc., shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Patients first. Strong VTE programs first.
How do we stay open to innovation when clinical teams are experiencing ‘thrombectomy fatigue’?
I’m hearing it from facilities: repeated presentations, evaluation requests, and companies competing for limited time. Established, long-term industry partners have earned trust through experience, training, and dependable support. Those relationships matter.
In a busy lab, it’s understandable to rely on familiar technologies and workflows. But those routines can leave little room to consider emerging options that may offer clinical benefit and economic value for hospitals and patients.
With so many companies knocking on the door, evaluating another device can feel overwhelming.
A patient-first, physician-led VTE strategy can help make those evaluations more focused:
- What gaps exist in our DVT and PE pathways?
- Which patients might benefit from another option?
- What does the evidence support—and what remains uncertain?
- What clinical and economic value would an evaluation need to demonstrate?
- Will the partner deliver dependable training and support?
Value includes the total cost of care for hospitals, along with patients’ out-of-pocket expenses, time away from work, and caregiver burden. Potential benefits should be measured, not assumed.
Having performed procedures as an RPA, and now supporting vascular teams, I believe industry should make this process easier: listen first, respect the team’s time, and follow through.
Patient care should guide the pathway. The pathway should guide technology selection.
How does your team balance trusted partnerships with openness to new technology — and what makes an evaluation worth your time?”
