Rob Maloney: Who Are the Real Experts? – The Quiet Resilience of the Bleeding Disorders Community

Rob Maloney, Chief Executive Officer of Hemophilia of Georgia, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“When I joined Hemophilia of Georgia, I thought I was bringing something valuable.

Thirty-plus years in healthcare.

Hospital leadership.

Experience leading teams through change.

All of that has certainly helped.

But if I’m honest…

I’ve probably learned more from the families we serve than they’ve ever learned from me.

They’ve taught me what resilience really looks like.

Not the kind you hear about in keynote speeches.

The quiet kind.

The parent who becomes an expert in a condition they never asked to learn about.

Young people learning to manage their own treatment and infusions.

The young adult who advocates for himself in an emergency department because he knows his disorder better than anyone else in the room.

They don’t see themselves as extraordinary.

They’re just living their lives.

But watching them has changed the way I think about leadership.

Leadership isn’t always standing in front of people.

Sometimes it’s walking beside them long enough to learn from them.

One of the unexpected gifts of leading a rare disease organization is that I’m constantly reminded who the real experts are.

It’s the families.

Our role isn’t to tell them how to live.

It’s to make sure they never have to walk their journey alone.”
