Shadiah Nassanga: The Economic Impact of Sickle Cell Disease

Shadiah Nassanga, Youth Ambassador at WSA, Lead Patient Advocate at Malaika Children Initiative, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“What happens when sickle cell (living with a chronic illness) affects not only your health, but your ability to earn a living?

Today, I met fellow warriors through the Skills and Entrepreneurship Training Program, and one thing stood out: for adults living with sickle cell, financial hardship can be as challenging as managing the disease itself.

Missed work. Medical costs. Transport. Unpredictable crises. Limited opportunities.

We cannot talk about sickle cell care without talking about economic empowerment.

I’m grateful to Someone Else’s Child, Inc., Wezesha Impact and the Haemophilia Foundation of Uganda for creating a space where warriors can build skills, explore entrepreneurship, and pursue greater financial independence.

This is also why I continue working on eMuN—a research-informed digital solution for sickle cell care and management, shaped by research and lived experience to support better day-to-day disease management.

To us, it is a life that deserves opportunity, dignity, and a future.

Let’s move beyond helping warriors survive.

Let’s build systems that help them thrive.”
