Turki Alqahtani: From Routine Testing to Specialized Hematology Diagnostics
Turki Alqahtani, Clinical laboratory science student at King saud University(KSU), shared a post on LinkedIn:
“I am pleased to share that I have successfully completed my Hematology Rotation.
During this rotation, I gained valuable hands-on experience in both routine and special hematology laboratory sections, including:
Routine Hematology:
- Complete Blood Count (CBC) using Abbott Alinity hq and Alinity hs for hematology analysis and slide preparation/staining.
- Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate (ESR) using Alifax analyzer.
- Digital blood cell morphology review using CellaVision.
- Platelet Function Analysis (PFA-100) for evaluating platelet function disorders.
- Coagulation testing, including PT, aPTT, and D-dimer using Stago coagulation analyzers.
Special Hematology:
- Hemoglobin electrophoresis using Sebia CAPILLARYS 3 OCTA for evaluation of hemoglobin disorders.
- Bone marrow biopsy processing and examination for hematological malignancies such as leukemia.
- Specialized coagulation investigations using Stago systems, including Von Willebrand disease testing, Factor VIII and Factor IX assays for hemophilia evaluation.
- Lupus Anticoagulant testing and antiphospholipid antibody-related investigations using ACL AcuStar for patients with abnormal thrombotic conditions such as Antiphospholipid Syndrome (APS).
- Heparin-Induced Thrombocytopenia (HIT) testing to detect immune-mediated complications associated with heparin therapy.
- Specialized platelet disorder investigations, including enzyme-based assays for rare platelet destruction disorders.
This rotation was a valuable experience that enhanced my understanding of hematological diagnostics and allowed me to connect theoretical knowledge with practical laboratory applications. It also emphasized the critical role of hematology laboratories in accurate diagnosis, monitoring, and patient care.
I am grateful for this learning opportunity and thankful to all supervisors and laboratory professionals who supported and guided me throughout this rotation.”
