Bartosz Hudzik: 5th Universal MI Definition Moves Closer to Biology in Women
Bartosz Hudzik, Associate Profesor at Medical University of Silesia, shared Martha Gulati‘s post on X:
“5th Universal MI Definition: sex-specific 99th-percentile troponin cutoffs to avoid underdiagnosing injury in women, plus recognition of SCAD, vasospasm and embolism as primary MI causes-mechanisms especially relevant to women.
Definitions catching up to biology.”
Martha Gulati, Director, Davis Women Heart Center at Cedars Houston Methodist DeBakey Heart and Vascular Center, shared a post on X:
“A major step forward for women at ESC Congress.
The new 5th Universal Definition of MI explicitly requires sex-specific 99th-percentile troponin thresholds recognizing that using the same cutoff in women and men can systematically underdiagnose myocardial injury in women.
It also recognizes SCAD, coronary vasospasm and embolism as causes of primary MI—mechanisms especially important in women.
Women’s heart attacks don’t always look like men’s. Our definitions finally reflect that. We wanted to enforce this in the Cheat Pain guidelines but we didn’t have enough data in the US at that time. Glad this has changed!”
