Ward Faisal: Ferric Carboxymaltose as an Alternative to Traditional Iron Preparations for Anemia

Ward Faisal, Senior PharmD Student at King Abdulaziz University, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“From personal concern over my mother’s unresponsive anemia to an evidence-based presentation at KAU

For years, traditional treatments weren’t working with my mom, and doctors kept randomly switching and recommending newer agents which were just leading to more problems instead of a solution. Anemia was a burden for so long, until one doctor identified the root cause accurately, treated it fully, then selected an agent tailored specifically to her needs.

Following the positive response that was finally achieved, it became clear that managing anemia isn’t just about supplementation, it’s about uncovering the root causes and investigating any possible factors leading to therapy failure, then tailoring therapy specifically to each individual patient.

This personal experience inspired me to present “Ferric Carboxymaltose (FCM) over Traditional Iron Preparations for Anemia Correction” as part of our Seminar 2 course. Throughout this seminar, I discussed:

  • Primary factors leading to oral iron malabsorption and the underlying causes of treatment failure.
  • The clinical rationale for selecting IV iron therapy, and therapeutic properties of Ferric Carboxymaltose (FCM).
  • Clinical safety profile, new boxed warnings, and key monitoring parameters associated with FCM.

Grateful for the chance to turn a personal challenge into a meaningful clinical learning experience, and thankful to my colleagues for their support and kind words!”
