Julia Owens: Stroke Remains One of the World’s Leading Causes of Death and Disability
Julia Owens, Chief Executive Officer at Basking Biosciences Inc, reposted from Basking Biosciences, Inc. on LinkedIn:
”Stroke remains one of the world’s leading causes of death and disability — and the numbers continue to rise.
This underscores why advancing new treatments is so critical.
For women, the risk is even higher, and symptoms can present differently — fatigue, nausea or confusion can be easy to overlook.
Recognizing the signs early and improving access to timely care remain essential to changing outcomes.
These are the realities that drive each of us at Basking to keep pushing for better treatments.”
Quoting Basking Biosciences, Inc.‘s post”
”Stroke remains the second leading cause of death and the third leading cause of death and disability combined, accounting for more than 160 million disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) worldwide.
Between 1990 and 2021, the global impact of stroke has grown substantially — incident strokes increased by 70%, deaths by 44%, and DALYs by 32%, with the majority of this burden (87% of deaths and 89% of DALYs) falling on low- and middle-income countries.
In 2019, the global cost of stroke exceeded US$964 billion annually and is projected to reach US$2 trillion by 2050, with long-term disability as the largest driver of economic and social burden.
These staggering statistics underscore the critical need for new therapeutic options that can expand access to timely treatment, improve outcomes and ultimately redefine how stroke is treated worldwide.”
