Sodium Citrate 1:9 vs 1:4 – Key Lab Tip for Accurate Results

Tareq Abadl, Medical Laboratory Specialist and Director of the Blood Bank at Dr. Abdelkader Al-Mutawakkil Hospital, posted on LinkedIn:

”Quick Tip: Sodium Citrate Tubes.

There are two types of sodium citrate tubes, depending on the concentration of the anticoagulant:

1. For coagulation tests (e.g., PT and PTT) → Sodium citrate ratio 1:9

2. For ESR tests (Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate) → Sodium citrate ratio 1:4

Important Tips:

  • Fill the tube completely up to the black mark for accurate results.
  • Gently invert the tube several times after blood collection to mix the blood with the anticoagulant.
  • Store tubes at room temperature before testing.
  • Avoid direct sunlight and high temperatures to preserve sample integrity.”
