”I’m excited to announce that my latest study, “Hemostatic changes following red blood cell transfusion in critically ill patients: a retrospective cohort study”, has been accepted for publication in the Journal of Clinical Medicine!
This work explores how a single-unit RBC transfusion affects clot dynamics in non-bleeding, critically ill patients — revealing changes that conventional coagulation tests often miss.
Using ROTEM analysis, I observed:
- Reduced fibrinogen contribution to clot strength
- Decreased hyperfibrinolysis
- Minimal changes in standard coagulation tests — except for a spike in D-dimer
These findings raise important questions about the hidden hemostatic effects of transfusion and underscore the need for more nuanced monitoring tools.
