Erin VanDyke: NBCA Centers of Excellence Aim to Improve Blood Clot Care

Erin VanDyke, Vice President of National Blood Clot Alliance Centers of Excellence, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Two sides of the same bedrail

On one side:

  • From an international NBCA survey of 1,050 blood clot patients (May–June 2023):
  • 65% said the diagnosis discussion lasted less than 10 minutes
  • Only 55% felt their diagnosis explanation was satisfactory
  • Just 16% received printed or electronic educational materials at diagnosis
  • 48% recalled receiving detailed information about anticoagulation risks and benefits
  • 35% weren’t diagnosed correctly on their first visit (50% required 3+ visits)
  • 32% of inpatients returned because symptoms persisted

On the other side:

  • Clinical teams are struggling too:
  • Over 50% of physicians report burnout, with highest rates among emergency physicians (65%), internists (60%), and pediatricians (59%)
  • Nearly 80% of physicians described their level of burnout as moderate to severe, and the majority (65%) said it has harmed their relationships.
  • 41.4% of PAs had burnout symptoms in a national survey, compared with other U.S. workers.
  • Burnout is strongly linked to intention to leave medicine, threatening continuity of care
  • Nurses report that burnout directly impacts patient safety, satisfaction, and quality of care, while also driving workforce turnover

Both patients and clinical teams are navigating a system that leaves them frustrated, exhausted, and often underserved.

That’s where National Blood Clot Alliance Center of Excellence (COE) program comes in. These centers are challenged with the unique task of bringing patients, clinicians, and the community together—standardizing pathways, strengthening communication, and improving education—so that care works better for everyone.

When we step across the bedrail—patients seeing the challenges clinical teams face, clinicians truly hearing the patient’s experience—we can begin to design care that improves outcomes and restores trust.”
