Adam Urato: How SSRIs May Affect Maternal and Fetal Serotonin
Adam Urato, Maternal-Fetal Medicine Physician at MetroWest Medical Center, shared a post on X about a recent article by Amy L. Salisbury et al., published in Neuropsychopharmacology, adding:
“SSRIs have profound chemical impact on the pregnant mom and her baby.
This study showed an EIGHT-fold reduction in mom’s platelet serotonin, and FOUR-fold decrease in baby’s.
Lower serotonin levels were associated with more abnormal (fidgety/restless) fetal movements on ultrasound.”
