Alexandra Bernal: Uncovering the Anticoagulant Role of Factor V in Hemophilia A

Alexandra Bernal, Co-President / Mental Health Advocate at Morgan’s Message, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article she and her colleagues co-authored, published in Blood, adding:

“I’m excited to share that our research has been published in Blood!

Our paper, ‘Factor V is an anticoagulant of the extrinsic pathway of coagulation and modifier of thrombin generation in hemophilia A,’ explores an unrecognized anticoagulant role of factor V and its effects on thrombin generation in hemophilia A.

Through the Graduate Experience for Multicultural Students (GEMS) in summer 2024, I had the opportunity to contribute to this work by running calibrated automated thrombography (CAT) experiments, varying different factors to study thrombin generation.

Having the chance to contribute to research investigating the mechanisms underlying coagulation in hemophilia has been an incredibly valuable experience, and one that has strengthened my interest in incorporating biomedical research into my future practice of medicine.

I am beyond grateful to everyone who made this possible, especially Dr. Keith Neeves and Dr. Megan Jewell, as well as everyone in the Neeves lab, for the invaluable mentorship and support throughout the research process.

It’s so rewarding to see this work published in Blood, and this is an experience I will definitely carry with me throughout my journey in medicine.”
