”Opportunities for improving platelet transfusion practice: A large retrospective audit across 22 hospitals”
In a large multicentre retrospective study of over 820,000 hospital admissions, nearly one-quarter of platelet transfusions did not comply with evidence-based guidelines.
Non-compliant transfusions were especially common in cardiac surgery, anti-platelet therapy, invasive procedures and primary prophylaxis, with lower non-compliance observed in academic hospitals compared with community settings.
Physician specialty influenced adherence to guidelines, underscoring the need for targeted interventions to improve platelet transfusion practices, reduce risks and address platelet shortages.
