Bradley Maron: A New Era of Human-Centric Cardiovascular Science

Bradley Maron, Editor-in-Chief of Circulation at American Heart Association, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article by Joseph C. Wu, published in Circulation, adding:

Joe has pioneered key advances in stem cell biology and drug discovery, and is a leading champion of new approach methodologies (NAMs) — creative alternatives to traditional animal models that aim to accelerate promising discoveries toward real clinical application.

Here’s why it matters: animal models have driven real discoveries, but they don’t fully capture the complexity of human cardiovascular disease.

Joe argues the future belongs to human-centric platforms — iPSC-derived heart cells, genome editing, AI, and single-cell multiomics — used together rather than in isolation.

He points to two emerging frontiers: ‘cell villages,’ where cells from thousands of genetically distinct people are studied side by side to capture real human variation, and ‘clinical trial-in-a-dish,’ testing candidate therapies on human cells before they ever reach a patient.
