Claire van Teunenbroek: Recruiting and Retaining Young Blood Donors Through Better Coordination

Claire van Teunenbroek, Bestuurslid at European Research Network On Philanthropy, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article he and his colleagues co-authored, published in Transfusion Medicine Reviews, adding:

“New article Recruiting and Retaining Young Blood Donors

What do we mean by a structural ‘vacancy’?

We often talk about the need to recruit more young blood donors.

We suggest that the challenge extends beyond identifying effective interventions. Schools can build awareness.

Blood collection agencies can improve the donation experience. Social and digital communities can strengthen norms and engagement.

The problem is not a lack of potential contributors. The problem is that no single actor is clearly positioned to connect these efforts and provide long-term coordination.

As a result, the need for collective action is clear, but leadership remains unclear.

In Short: The problem is not a lack of ideas. The problem is a lack of coordination.

Written with Rita Kottasz ( Kingston University) and Joris M. Schröder (University of Nottingham), published by Transfusion Medicine Reviews.

We present a narrative review of 13 recent studies (published since 2023) on engaging younger blood donors and discuss the effectiveness of emerging interventions.

We find that existing interventions primarily target three mechanisms: awareness, social engagement, and emotional arousal.”
