Louise St. Germain Bannon: Closing the Awareness Gap in Women’s Health and Blood Clot Risks

Louise St. Germain Bannon, Interim Executive Director at International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis (ISTH), shared a post on LinkedIn:

“You or someone you know may be affected by a blood clot.

Would you know the signs?

Today is World Thrombosis Day, a global call to action to raise awareness of one of the world’s most serious and often overlooked health threats.

The global statistics are sobering:

  • 1 in 4 people worldwide die from conditions related to thrombosis.
  • 70.9% of women surveyed across 38 countries received no education about blood clot risks during pregnancy and postpartum, or received it only after a clot was diagnosed.
  • Just 10.9% of women surveyed had been taught which symptoms of blood clots to watch for during pregnancy and postpartum.

These numbers represent a critical gap in awareness and education, and an opportunity for the healthcare community to make a difference.

This year’s campaign puts women’s health in focus.

Blood clot risk can change throughout a woman’s life, including with hormonal contraception, pregnancy, the weeks after childbirth and menopause.

Yet these risks and their warning signs can be overlooked.

Blood clots can affect anyone.

They can develop during recovery from surgery, hospitalization, illness or other circumstances that may not be obvious to patients and families.

Awareness matters.

Prevention matters.

Recognizing the signs matters.

As healthcare professionals, researchers, advocates and organizations, we all have a role to play.

A conversation with a patient, a shared educational resource or a reminder to recognize symptoms could make a meaningful difference.

Today, please help spread the word.

Share this post with your colleagues, networks and communities.

Let’s make blood clot awareness part of everyday healthcare, across every country and at every stage of life.

Learn more, explore resources and get involved.”
