Denis Nikolov: A Call for Routine UACR Assessment in High-Risk Cardiovascular Patients
Denis Nikolov, Interventional Cardiologist shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article he and his colleagues co-authored, published in Biomedical Journal of Scientific and Technical Research (BJSTR), adding:
”I’m pleased to share our newly published mini-review:
‘Should Cardiologists Routinely Measure the Urinary Albumin-to-Creatinine Ratio? A Mini Review’
In everyday cardiology practice, renal assessment is still often limited to serum creatinine and eGFR. However, preserved eGFR does not necessarily mean the absence of kidney damage.
Urinary albumin-to-creatinine ratio (UACR) provides complementary information and may help us:
- detect CKD despite preserved eGFR
- improve cardio-renal risk stratification
- identify high-risk patients earlier
- support timely initiation or optimization of evidence-based cardio-renal therapies
Our conclusion is straightforward: UACR should be strongly considered as part of routine assessment in cardiovascular patients at increased cardio-renal-metabolic risk, particularly those with heart failure, type 2 diabetes, arterial hypertension, or established atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease.
